If U.S. taxpayer dollars are spent by our government, it makes sense that those dollars should be spent on products and services provided by U.S. citizens and companies. Congressman Baird believes in this principle, which is why he has long championed the Buy America law.

Buy America helps working men and women in the United States keep their jobs and earn decent, living wages. Without Buy America protections, an estimated 300 new manufacturing jobs and 500 manufacturing-related jobs would be lost right here in Southwest Washington.

When Congressman Baird learned that the Federal Highway Administration was going out of its way to go around the law and encourage the purchase of steel from foreign countries like China and Japan, he vowed to fight it. He introduced legislation to help strengthen the enforcement of Buy America protections and save American jobs. He has also met with Administration officials like Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta to stop federal agencies from circumventing the Buy America law.
