ACES Act Passes With Bean's Support

Bean Joins Bipartisan Group of Colleagues to Introduce CLEAN TEA Bill Aimed at Creating a More Efficient Transportation System
Yesterday, Congresswoman Melissa Bean (D-IL) joined Sens. Thomas Carper (D-Del.) and Arlen Specter (R-Penn.) and Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.), Ellen Tauscher (D-Calif.), Steven La Tourette (R-Ohio), and Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) to introduce The Clean Low-Emissions Affordable New Transportation Equity Act or CLEAN TEA. The bill is predicated upon passage of a comprehensive climate change bill, such as the one considered by the Senate earlier this year, which would generate revenue for the Federal government. Under CLEAN TEA, ten percent of the revenue would be used to create a more efficient transportation system and lower greenhouse gas emissions through strategies including funding new or expanded transit or passenger rail; supporting development around transit stops; and making neighborhoods safer for bikes and pedestrians.

House Passes Bean Amendment June 14, 2006
Washington, D.C. - With overwhelming bipartisan support, late last night the House agreed to an amendment to H.R. 5576, The Transportation, Treasury, HUD and DC Appropriations Act offered by Congresswoman Melissa Bean (IL-08), that would increase funding for the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Fuel Economy from $1.3 million to $8 million. The amendment passed 234 to 190, with 39 Republicans voting in favor of it.

Washington, D.C. - Today, U.S. Representative Melissa Bean joined a bipartisan coalition including U.S. Representatives Bart Stupak (D-MI), Sherrod Brown (D-OH), Vern Ehlers (R-MI), Rahm Emanual (D-IL), Marcy Kaptur (D-OH), Dale Kildee (D-MI), Mark Steven Kirk (R-IL), Jan Schakowsky (D-IL), and other Members of Congress representing Great Lakes states to introduce the Great Lakes Oil and Gas Drilling Ban that would prohibit oil and gas drilling in the Great Lakes. There are currently five such wells in Lake Michigan, which borders Bean's district.

SCHAUMBURG, IL— Today, U.S. Representative Melissa Bean joined Congressmen Rahm Emanuel (D-IL), Bart Stupak (D-MI), Janice Schakowsky (D-IL), Vernon Ehlers (R-MI), Mark Green (R-WI), John McHugh (R-NY), and Louise Slaughter (D-NY) at a press conference to call on the House of Representatives to ban oil and gas drilling in and under the Great Lakes. On Tuesday, the rules committee struck down the members’ amendment to the Energy Bill. The members now plan to introduce a standalone bill to protect the Great Lakes later this month. That bill is also expected to garner bipartisan support, including that of Congressman Mark Steven Kirk (R-IL) who has previously supported similar legislation.
