Berry Secures $500,000 for Marion Overpass in House Transportation Appropriations Bill

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Representative Marion Berry  (D-AR, 1st) announced today that he was able to secure an additional $500,000 in the House version of the Fiscal Year 2007 Transportation  Appropriations Bill for a rail grade separation over the Burlington Northern Santa Fe railroad tracks in the City of Marion. Once the rail grade separation is complete, highway officials can construct an overpass to divert traffic over the 55 trains that pass through the city each day.

"With increasing train traffic and growing residential development, the City of Marion is battling serious congestion," said Congressman Berry. "A brand new overpass will solve all of these problems, while ensuring that Marion continues to grow."

The Marion rail grade separation is one of Congressman Berry's top transportation priorities. He secured $3.8 million for the project in last year's Transportation Reauthorization bill and another $350,000 in the Fiscal Year 2006 Transportation Appropriations Bill. State transportation officials estimate that the entire project -including the rail separation, overpass, approaches, and the upgrade of Highway 77 - will cost an estimated $12 million.

A new overpass is necessary to improve emergency vehicle access and relieve traffic congestion for area residents and businesses. With the closest grade separation over the BNSF tracks ten miles outside of Marion, traffic is a frequent problem during peak rail times. This project will ease congestion for the 1,500 homes and numerous businesses that are often blocked as multiple trains pass through the area.

"I am pleased that my colleagues recognize the importance of this project, and remain committed to improving economic development in Arkansas' Delta," said Congressman Berry. "I look forward to seeing this project complete, and will do everything I can in the coming years to improve infrastructure throughout Crittenden County and the rest of Northeast Arkansas."

The Fiscal Year 2007 Transportation Appropriations Bill has passed the full U.S. House of Representatives. The measure must be considered by the U.S. Senate and approved again by both chambers before it is signed into law.
