Berry Surveys NEA Storm Damage: Calls For Immediate Federal Assistance

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  After returning from a tour of the storm damaged region in Northeast Arkansas, U.S. Congressman Marion Berry (D-AR, 1st) sent a letter today to the Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) requesting financial assistance for affected counties once the Governor requests a disaster declaration. The counties affected by the severe storms and flooding include Baxter, Clay, Fulton, Greene, Izard, Lawrence, Randolph, Searcy, and Sharp counties.

"It is the responsibility of the federal government to step in and help citizens recover from serious natural disasters,” said Congressman Berry. "I have seen the damage first-hand and strongly encourage FEMA and USDA to reassure these communities that the federal government will help them get back on their feet."

The Arkansas Department of Emergency Management (ADEM) is currently assessing damage throughout the storm affected region. Once this assessment is complete, the Governor must decide whether to make a formal request to the President for disaster assistance. If the President approves this request, FEMA will establish a temporary office in the storm region where victims can apply for housing assistance, disaster grants or loans, unemployment compensation, or small business assistance. Farmers may apply at their local Farm Service Agency office for assistance. The deadline for most public assistance programs is 60 days after the President issues a disaster declaration.

The storms took the lives of one junior fireman and one retired fireman and caused extensive flooding along the Spring, Black, Cache, Eleven Point, Current, and White Rivers. Damage is extensive ranging from destroyed roads, to damaged homes, and flooded crops.

Any resident who needs immediate assistance is encouraged to call Congressman Berry's toll-free office at 1-800-866-2701. His staff will work to coordinate immediate relief until FEMA, USDA, and ADEM make final determinations about available public assistance.

Dear Director Paulison and Secretary Johanns:

I am writing in reference to the recent severe storms and flooding that hit several areas of Arkansas, including Baxter, Clay, Fulton, Greene, Izard, Lawrence, Randolph, Searcy, and Sharp.

These storms have caused extensive flooding damage and in many cases destroyed homes, infrastructure, and crop land.  These counties will require expedited effort from FEMA in order to alleviate the burden that the storms have caused.  I request that FEMA be prepared to provide any available assistance to these counties and all other affected areas as soon as possible.

I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter.  Please let me know if I may be of further assistance.

                                                                        Sincerely,
