Berry Delivers an Additional $577,000 for Ozark Regional Airport

WASHINGTON, D.C. –  U.S. Representative Marion Berry  (D-AR, 1st) announced today that he was able to secure $577,000 in the FY06 Transportation Appropriations bill for an instrument landing system at the Ozark Regional Airport. These funds satisfy the shortfall identified by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in September, and enable airport officials to proceed with plans to offer commercial flights between Mountain Home and St. Louis.

"Providing commercial air service to the residents of Baxter County is one of my top priorities," said Congressman Berry. "Although the FAA announcement was a minor setback, we were determined to keep this project on schedule."

Although Congressman Berry secured $1 million in 2003 for Ozark Regional Airport to install an instrument landing system, officials at FAA notified the Congressman this September that it needed an additional $500,000 to complete the project. Congressman Berry worked with his colleagues on the House Appropriations Committee to make sure $577,000 was included in the final conference report for the FY06 Transportation Appropriations bill. Both the U.S. Senate and the U.S. House have approved the measure which is now on its way to the President for signature.

FAA requires all airports to install an instrument landing system before they can offer commercial flights. An instrument landing system helps air traffic controllers and pilots land plans safely during bad weather. Once the system is complete, Ozark Regional Airport intends to work with AmericanConnection Flights to offer two flights per day between Mountain Home and St. Louis.

"St. Louis is a popular destination for our business leaders, and is exactly what this region needs to boost development," said Congressman Berry.  "A vast transportation network is the best foundation for a strong economy."

Congressman Berry continues to work closely with airport officials and community leaders in Baxter County to provide commercial air service to the businesses and residents in and around Mountain Home. He secured $1 million in 2005 for land acquisition and helped airport officials secure $574,000 in federal funds for a small community air service pilot program.
