WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Marion Berry (D-AR, 1st) announced today that he has formed a New Madrid Earthquake Congressional Working Group with colleagues whose districts lie along the New Madrid Seismic zone. The working Group will help local communities develop emergency plans, improve regional communication, and equip local first responders in anticipation of a potentially dangerous earthquake.
"We simply cannot afford to let another natural disaster catch us off-guard," said Congressman Berry. "We know Arkansas sits on a dangerous fault line where the potential for disaster increases every day. Instead of standing around talking about this problem, we need to come up with a plan that prepares everyone for whatever lies ahead."
The New Madrid Seismic zone lies in the Central Mississippi Valley, extending through Missouri, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky, Mississippi, and Illinois. The area has experienced some of the largest earthquakes in United States history, including 4 catastrophic earthquakes with a magnitude of 7.0 or greater in just three months between 1811 and 1812. Scientists who monitor earthquake activity predict that the area will experience a similar catastrophic earthquake in the near future. They estimate a 50% chance of one with magnitude of 6.0 or higher by the year 2000 and a 90% chance by the year 2040.
An earthquake with a magnitude equal to the 1811- 1812 disasters could result in significant loss of life as well as damage to roads, property, and other types of infrastructure. Congressional leaders formed the New Madrid Earthquake Congressional Working Group to minimize potential destruction by making sure communities have the means to respond effectively in dangerous situations. The working group will focus the majority of its efforts on developing a regional emergency response plan, so every community is prepared in the event of an earthquake.
"While I have complete faith in Arkansas' first responders, we need to make sure every community is on the same page," said Congressman Berry. "By coordinating our fire departments, police departments, and public health officials, we can provide the best protection for citizens and a quick recovery."
As a member of the Homeland Security Appropriations Subcommittee, Congressman Berry will also work with his colleagues and officials at the Department of Homeland Security to make sure the region has the resources necessary to develop an effective earthquake response plan. |
