WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Representative Marion Berry (D-AR, 1st) announced today that he will hold a Medicare Prescription Drug Enrollment Fair at Stuttgart Public High School in Stuttgart on Wednesday, December 14, 2005, to help seniors register for the new benefit. The fair will last from 8:00am to 4:00pm and will provide plenty of information and one-on-one counseling assistance for individuals who need help finding the best available plan.
"This may not be the best prescription drug benefit, but it is all we have right now to provide families with relief from higher drug costs," said Congressman Berry. "We need to do everything possible to make this registration process easy for seniors so they do not become overwhelmed and eventually give-up."
Medicare beneficiaries have until May 15, 2006 to sign-up for the benefit before being penalized for late registration. Representatives from the Area Agency on Aging and the Social Security Administration will be available at the fair to provide counseling services for individuals who have not decided on a plan. There will also be a number of computers so Medicare beneficiaries can research plans available in Arkansas and begin the registration process if they are ready to select a plan. Individuals should bring their Medicare Health Insurance card, their current prescription medications, their preference of drugstore, and any information on current prescription drug coverage.
"My staff and I intend to be there every step of the way to help seniors through the registration process," said Congressman Berry. "Even if you cannot attend the fair, give my office a call and someone will be available to answer any questions you may have. The last thing I want is for anyone to feel confused."
Although it is not mandatory for individuals to register for the benefit, those that do sign-up will receive prescription drug coverage beginning on January 1, 2006. The Center for Medicare Services (CMS) has approved fifteen companies to provide stand-alone drug coverage in Arkansas and four companies to provide all Medicare-covered services including the new benefit. Seniors can find information on these plans in the "Medicare and You" handbook they received in the mail or by going online to www.Medicare.gov.
Stuttgart High School is located at 401-A W. 22nd Street in Stuttgart. The fair will be in room 119. Constituents should enter through the front office and follow the signs to the computer lab. |
