Committee Information

Committee on Oversight and Government Reform

Committee on Science and Technology

Committee on Veterans' Affairs

Newly elected Congressman Brian Bilbray (CA-50) was first appointed to serve on the House Committees on Armed Services, Government Reform and Veterans' Affairs. At the time, Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert (R-IL) said, "Congressman Bilbray will be a valuable addition to each of these committees. The military community is a significant part of Brian's San Diego County district and I expect him to provide his committees with unique insight and perspective."

The House Armed Services Committee, then led by former Chairman Duncan Hunter (R-CA), had significant oversight of the Department of Defense as well as a significant portion of the annual operating budget of the Department of Energy. "Brian's leadership will be critical to strengthening our nation's defense forces and ensuring our servicemen and women are equipped with the resources they need to win the War on Terror. His insight will contribute to our progress on these fronts and I look forward to working with him on these important issues."

The House Committee on Veterans' Affairs is responsible for reviewing veterans' programs and aims to strengthen existing laws concerning veterans with emphasis on health care, disability compensation, job training and education. The Committee's Chairman when Congressman Bilbray was appointed, Steve Buyer (R-IN), welcomed Bilbray to the committee, "With such a large military constituency in Congressman Bilbray's district, Brian will undoubtedly be a steadfast supporter of those veterans and will be a welcomed addition to our committee."

Congressman Bilbray's final original committee assignment was to the House Government Reform Committee. The Committee serves as Congress' chief investigative and oversight committee, and is granted broad jurisdiction because of the importance of effective, centralized oversight. Chairman Tom Davis (R-VA) said, "Congressman Bilbray was a part of the historic Class of 1994 that sought to reduce spending, taxation and the size of government. His experience and track record will make him an effective member of this committee."

"I'm honored to serve on these three extremely important committees," Rep. Bilbray said at the time. "I can't think of a more important time to serve on committees like Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs, especially during this time of war. My top priorities will continue to be securing our border, supporting our troops and winning the War on Terror. I am also grateful for my appointment to the Government Reform Committee where I can work to ensure that local governments are reimbursed for the costs of illegal immigration and that the integrity of our voting process is preserved and not corrupted through illegal immigrant participation," he continued.

In the 111th Congress, Congressman Bilbray serves on Oversight and Government Reform, the House Committee on Veterans' Affairs and Science and Technology, bringing his unique San Diego perspective and clear understanding of government to these ever important committees.
