University of Guam Lands $4.7 Million in Federal Education Grants

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—October 5, 2007 Washington, D.C.

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today said the University of Guam will receive nearly $5 Million in grant funding from the U.S. Department of Education. UOG’s Pacific Consortium for Instructional Materials Accessibility Project has been awarded $1,404,068 under the Educational Media Activities To Improve State Systems For Providing Educational Materials In Accessible Formats Program, for the first year and an additional one million each for the following two years.  UOG’s PACIFIC (Pacific Assessment Consortium Implementing Fully Innovative Change) Project will receive $1,338,455 under the General Supervision Enhancement Grant Program.

“I commend the University of Guam for successfully making the case to secure this funding, which will provide for projects to assist not only our own students but those in our region as well,” Congresswoman Bordallo said.

Both consortiums are composed of Guam, the Commonwealth of the Northern Marianas, the Federated States of Micronesia, The Republic of Palau, the Republic of the Marshall Islands, and American Samoa. The IMAP consortium was established to address the common and unique needs of Pacific jurisdictions for making print instructional materials available in accessible formats to children with disabilities.  The PACIFIC Project is committed to implementing high-quality alternate assessments based on alternate academic achievement standards that yield accurate reporting and analysis of participation and performance of students with cognitive disabilities.
