STATEMENT ON THE PASSING OF FORMER CONGRESSMAN HENRY J. HYDE OF ILLINOIS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—November 29, 2007 Washington, D.C.

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo of Guam released the following statement today upon learning of the passing of a former colleague, U.S. Congressman Henry J. Hyde of Illinois. First elected to Congress in 1974, Congressman Hyde served for 32 years in the House of Representatives before retiring from office last year. He was not a candidate for re-election to the 110th Congress. Congressman Hyde served as Chairman of the House Committee on the Judiciary during the 104th, 105th, and 106th Congresses (1995-2000) and as Chairman of the House Committee on International Relations during the 107th, 108th, and 109th Congresses (2001-2006). Earlier this month President George W. Bush awarded Congressman Hyde the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the country’s highest civilian honor, in recognition of his public service and civic contributions.

“Chairman Hyde was a true gentleman, gifted orator, and thoughtful legislator. He was a staunch defender of life and worked vigorously to strengthen democracy and democratic institutions abroad. I was privileged to serve with Chairman Hyde during his final four years of service in the House.

“As a World War II veteran who served in the Philippines he was sensitive to our efforts to resolve war claims for our people. As Chairman of the Judiciary Committee he supported and cosponsored the original bill calling for the establishment of the Guam War Claims Review Commission.

“Today, we offer condolences to his family and friends and to his constituents in Illinois. We remember him as a friend of Guam and we honor his service in Congress.
