Bordallo Visits Troops in Afghanistan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—February 19, 2008 Washington, D.C.

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo returned to Washington, D.C. today after a three-day fact finding mission to Afghanistan.  The Congressional Delegation was led by Congressman Robert Andrews of New Jersey, and also included, in addition to Congresswoman Bordallo, Congressman Scott Garrett of New Jersey and Congressman John Kline of Minnesota.

The Congressional Delegation met with high ranking military officials to discuss progress made by Provincial Reconstruction Teams (PRTs) in rebuilding Afghanistan.  The Delegation also had the opportunity to meet first-hand with servicemembers embedded with the PRTs in various regions across the country.  U.S. Ambassador William B. Wood met with the Delegation to update them on security matters and economic progress in Afghanistan.  The group also met with General Daniel K. McNeill, U.S. Army, Commander of the International Security Assistance Force, to discuss U.S. government efforts to obtain greater security force assistance from European members of NATO.

As she has done in the past, Congresswoman Bordallo was able to spread the “Guam” spirit to servicemen and women from Guam by distributing guguria and donne’ dinanche to Guam soldiers and airmen deployed to Afghanistan.  She met with men and women from Guam serving in Afghanistan and in Kuwait and Qatar when the delegation was in transit.

“We are proud of our men and women from Guam, particularly our Guam National Guardsmen who are serving multiple deployments in the theater of operations.  They have been called to duty in Afghanistan because they bring unique skills that are important to the success of the provincial reconstruction teams,” said Congresswoman Madeleine Bordallo.  “We look forward to the safe return of all our servicemembers serving our nation in many dangerous places around the world.”
