Congresswoman Bordallo Appointed to Merchant Marine Academy Board of Visitors

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—February 21, 2008 Washington, D.C.

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo speaks with Senator Daniel K. Inouye following the first meeting of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Board of Visitors recently.

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo was recently appointed by Congressman Ike Skelton of Missouri, Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee, to serve a two-year term on the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy Board of Visitors.

Congresswoman Bordallo joins other Members of Congress, including Congressmen Steve Israel of New York, Roscoe Bartlett of Maryland, Peter T. King of New York, Carolyn McCarthy of New York and Jeff Miller of Florida as well as Senators Daniel K. Inouye of Hawaii, Ted Stevens of Alaska, Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and Frank R. Lautenberg from New Jersey on the Board of Visitors.

The mission of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy is to educate midshipmen to serve in the various maritime industries and the U.S. Merchant Marine upon graduation.  The U.S. Merchant Marine is comprised of vessels of all types that travel in and around the nation bringing in U.S. goods bound for foreign markets, or arriving in our harbors with merchandise and materials for American consumers.

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo discusses upcoming Board of Visitors meetings with Sean Connaughton, Maritime Administrator of the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy.

As a member of the Merchant Marine Board of Visitors, Congresswoman Bordallo will be responsible for making recommendations on the operation of the Academy.  Recently, the Board of Visitors met in the U.S. Capitol with the Honorable Sean Connaughton, Maritime Administrator and the Honorable Mary E. Peters, Secretary of Transportation for the new Board’s inaugural meeting.  During the meeting the group made it a top priority to work closely with the Academy’s leadership to increase visibility of the Academy to prospective students across the country.

“Our nation’s merchant marines are critical to ensuring the viability of the maritime industry.  The United States Merchant Marine Academy fulfills a vital role in training officers who serve in the Merchant Marines or who accept commissions in the U.S. Navy.   The midshipmen who attend the Merchant Marine Academy are outstanding men and women and the Board is committed to ensuring they continue to receive a first class education,” Congresswoman Bordallo said. “Serving on the Board of Visitors will allow me to help promote the Merchant Marine Academy in our Pacific region.  I also look forward to participating as a board member with my colleagues to improve the Academy so that it adapts to the challenges of the 21st century.”
