Congresswoman Bordallo Supports Inclusion of U.S. Territories in U.S. History Curriculum

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - June 24 , 2008– Washington, D.C.

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo yesterday spoke on the floor of the House of Representatives urging passage of House Concurrent Resolution 2, “Expressing the sense of the Congress that children in the United States should understand and appreciate the contributions of individuals from the territories of the United States and the contributions of such individuals in United States history.”

House Concurrent Resolution 2 was introduced by Congresswoman Donna Christensen of the U.S. Virgin Islands at the start of the 110th Congress and is cosponsored by Congresswoman Bordallo and the other Members of the House representing the U.S. Territories.  The resolution encourages educators around the country to include the history of the territories, and the contributions of individuals from the territories, in their teaching of U.S. history.

“The teaching of United States history is fundamental to the American classroom.  Yet, the teaching of history can be elevated today with greater incorporation of facts related to the territories and our fellow Americans who call the territories home,” Congresswoman Bordallo said on the floor of the House of Representatives. “Integration into the modern day curriculum of the accounts of relationships and the circumstances surrounding the entry of each of the territories into the American family is both appropriate and needed if our teaching of American history is to be complete and meaningful.”

H. Con. Res. 2 was passed by voice vote late yesterday evening.  The resolution is now in the U.S. Senate for its consideration.
