Department of Defense Reaffirms Commitment to Small Businesses

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—June 26, 2007Washington, D.C

In a House Committee on Armed Services hearing today on improving Department of Defense (DOD) business transformation and management, Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo asked Deputy Secretary of Defense Gordon R. England what challenges DOD faces in trying to integrate Guam small businesses into DOD business transformation efforts.

Congresswoman Bordallo said that because Guam will experience a significant amount of military construction and other work as part of the relocation of U.S. Marines from Okinawa, now would be the time to uncover and correct existing challenges in DOD to ensure Guam’s small businesses are included with the build-up plans.

“The DoD has committed to involving Guam’s small businesses in this effort.  Do integrating small businesses into DoD contracting efforts pose specific challenges to the business transformation effort?  More specifically, will integrating Guam small businesses into building-up the bases on Guam pose certain challenges?  What are they and how can this committee help you?” Congresswoman Bordallo asked.

Mr. England responded that he was not aware of any existing challenges, but reaffirmed DOD’s commitment to small business in Guam and around the country.

“Small businesses are hugely important to our nation and to DOD,” Mr. England said. (making small businesses successful) is part of our commitment, and we’ll do that in Guam as we do every place else.”
