House Passes “National Clean Beaches Week” Resolution

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—June 28, 2007Washington, D.C

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo is among the cosponsors of H. Res. 186, “Supporting the goals and ideals of National Clean Beaches Week, June 29-July 5, and recognizing the considerable value of American beaches and their role in American culture.”  The resolution passed unanimously on the House floor last night.

“The problem of littered beaches and shore lines afflicts all the coastal states and all the insular territories,” the Congresswoman said. “Litter is not only unsightly; it threatens the marine environment and is a health hazard for all beachgoers.”

According to the Clean Beaches Council, a non-profit organization established in 1998, during the United Nation’s “International Year of the Ocean,” more than half of the total U.S. population lives in a costal county and some 180 million people visit U.S. beaches and coasts annually. The CBC is committed to protecting America’s beaches by raising public awareness and volunteer participation, and developing innovative approaches to coastal management and protection of human health and the environment.

“In line with the goals and ideals of National Clean Beaches Week, I want to commend the ‘Kids for Coral’ and our boaters, divers, fishermen, and concerned citizens who volunteer for beach clean-ups in Guam,” the Congresswoman said.
