Bordallo Returns from Iraq and Afghanistan

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—September 24, 2007 Washington, D.C.

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today returned to Washington, D.C. after a four-day long fact finding mission to Iraq and Afghanistan.  Led by Congressman Neil Abercrombie of Hawaii, the Congressional Delegation included Congresswoman Bordallo, Congressman Joe Wilson of South Carolina, Congressman Rick Larsen of Washington, Congressman John Kline of Minnesota, and Congressman Michael Conaway of Texas.

This trip marks Congresswoman Bordallo’s eighth visit to Iraq.  It came on the heels of Congress having received from General David H. Petraeus, Commander, Multi-National Force-Iraq, and Ambassador Ryan C. Crocker, United States Ambassador to the Republic of Iraq, an assessment of the security and governance situation in Iraq.

In Iraq, the delegation met with high ranking military officials to discuss redeployment planning options.  The delegation observed the use of military equipment that has played a critical role in missions in Iraq, such as the Predator Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and the Counter Rocket Artillery Mortar System.  The delegation also met with Provincial Reconstruction Teams in Afghanistan and discussed progress on stemming the flow of illegal drugs from Afghanistan to other parts of the world.  The delegation also had a chance to meet with injured servicemembers who had been hospitalized at Landstuhl Hospital in Germany before returning to Washington, D.C.

As she has during her previous visits, Congresswoman Bordallo was able to spread the “Hafa Adai” spirit to Guam soldiers and airmen deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan with packages of guguria and pugua.

“I met many servicemen and women from Guam who are performing their missions with dedication and professionalism.  I also met with Guam National Guardsmen in Afghanistan who are deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.  Our men and women are doing a great job under very difficult conditions.  I told them we are all proud of them, we miss them, and we are praying for their safe return home,” Congresswoman Bordallo said.
