Cantate Group Gives Impromptu
Performance On Capital Hill
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – March 24, 2003
– Washington, D.C. - The halls of the Cannon House Office
Building were filled with the spirit of the islands as the Guam’s
very own Cantate group gave an impromptu performance last Friday,
March 21, 2003.
The group who performed in both Washington D.C. and New York City
came to visit Congresswoman Bordallo on Friday morning with the
intention of going on a Capitol tour. Unfortunately, due to the
increased terrorism threat and the subsequent heightened security,
the tour was cancelled. Nevertheless, the Congresswoman insisted
that the group be shown around and arrangements were made for the
group to go on a tour which included stops at the United States
Botanic Gardens, the Supreme Court, and Union Station.
“I’m a little disappointed,” noted Cheryl Adriano, one
of the group members, “But I can understand why things are this
way, and it was great of the Congresswoman to arrange this other
tour last minute.”
The Congresswoman managed to convince the group into singing a
few numbers. The group gave a rousing performance and ended with
the National Anthem and Fanoghe Chamorro. When the group concluded,
they given a rousing ovation by staffers from several offices who
had gathered outside the Congresswoman’s door to hear the group
sing.
“The music of our island is very beautiful, and meant to be
shared with everyone,”remarked the Congresswoman. “It was a
privilege to have this group perform the national anthems, especially
on a day like today. We must all band together to show our patriotism
in support of our country and our our servicemen and women.”
