Congresswoman Bordallo Announces
$39.5 Million for Anderson Air Force Base

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – April 2, 2003 – Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo (D-GU) announced today that the Senate has provided $37.5 million in military construction funds to build a new storm proof hanger at Andersen Air Force Base as well as $2 million to repair family housing units. The Wartime Supplemental Appropriations Bill also includes operational and maintenance funds as necessary to ensure that Andersen Air Force Base is fully mission capable following the damage caused by Supertyphoon Pongsona.

“I would like to thank Senator Inouye and the members of the Senate Appropriations Committee for recognizing the need to strengthen Andersen Air Force Base. The new hanger will protect bombers and other aircraft that are strategically placed on Guam. Just as important to the military community on Guam, the Senate has also acted to provide $2 million to improve family housing damaged by Supertyphoon Pongsona. I urge my colleagues in the House to support these efforts,” said Congresswoman Bordallo.

The Congresswoman met with Senator Inouye (D-HI) in January to request typhoon recovery funds for Guam. Congresswoman Bordallo has also written to the House Appropriations Committee urging that the House take action to support Guam’s typhoon recovery.

The new reinforced concrete high-bay aircraft hanger will be built to withstand 170 mph winds as well as potential seismic activity. The state of the art climate control within the hanger will ensure that B-2 bombers will be able to use the hangers for repairs and maintenance.

“This new hanger reinforces Guam’s importance to providing regional security. I see it as a further indication of a 180 degree turn around that Department of Defense is taking with regards to Guam. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I will continue to work to bolster such efforts,” said Congresswoman Bordallo.
