FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –
September 25, 2003 – Washington, D.C. – –
Congresswoman Bordallo joined with her colleagues in the House in
a veterans forum with the national leaders of veterans organizations
and military associations to urge Congress to provide concurrent
receipt for disabled veterans and increase funding for veterans'
health care. Congresswoman Bordallo was recognized by the event's
organizers as representing the interests of veterans on Guam and
the territories.
The forum included representatives
of the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Veterans of Foreign Wars,
the American Legion, the Disabled American Veterans, the Jewish
War Veterans, the Military Order of the Purple Heart, the Paralyzed
Veterans of America, American Ex-prisoners of War, AMVETS, the Blinded
Veterans Association, the Association for Service Disabled Veterans,
and the Gold Star Wives of America.
Military Associations in attendance
were the National Guard Association, the Retired Enlisted Association,
the Reserve Officers Association, the Retired Officers Association,
the National Association for Uniformed Services, the Fleet Reserve
Association, the Air Force Sergeants Association, the Military Officers
Association of America, the Enlisted Association of the National
Guard.
"I am pleased to be a cosponsor
of H.R. 303, a bill that would ensure that veterans receive both
the disability compensation and retirement benefits which they are
due. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I strongly
oppose any efforts to redefine a service connected disability as
a backdoor way to limit disability compensation," said Congresswoman
Bordallo. "Given the sacrifices they have made in protecting
the liberties and freedoms of our country, it would be wrong to
turn our back on our veterans when they need for our help."
