Congresswoman
Bordallo Announces
the Renewal of the Navy's Base Operations Support Contract
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE –
September 26, 2003 – Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman
Bordallo announced today that the Department of the Navy has renewed
its contract with Raytheon Technical Services for the Base Operations
Support contract at the Command Naval Headquarters of the Marianas
Islands. According to decision reached by the Naval Facilities
Engineering Command, Pacific Division, Raytheon will continue to
be responsible for nearly all of the non-core mission support function
for the Navy on Guam.
"The decision by the Navy to
increase the scope of the contract to $66.4 million for the coming
year reflects the importance of Guam as a strategic asset in the
Asia-Pacific region. With a third submarine soon to arrive
and numerous visits by aircraft carriers this year, Guam is becoming
increasingly important to the Navy. This contract reflects
that continued growth," said Congresswoman Bordallo.
"I know that many local businesses
were interested in the solicitation of the BOS contract and attended
the vendor fair organized by the Navy. Their interest demonstrated
that Guam's business community can meet the needs of the Navy, so
they don't have to go off-island for services. Partnering
with the military is an important component of getting our economy
back on track. I have had a number of meetings with Raytheon
leading up to this decision and have consistently advocated that
they make every effort to maximize the use of the talent and resources
we have right here in Guam. I am pleased to see their continued
participation in the Guam community," said Congresswoman Bordallo.
The Guam Chamber of Commerce recently
visited Washington, D.C., to advocate an increased military presence
in Guam. During their visit, Congresswoman Bordallo met with
Mr. John Young, the Navy's Assistant Secretary for Research, Development
and Acquisition to encourage him to ensure that the Navy and its
prime contractors would make a greater effort to utilize small and
minority owned businesses on Guam in the coming year.
