President
Signs Compact Renegotiation Into Law:
Compact-Impact for Guam Addressed
FOR
IMMEDIATE RELEASE – December 17, 2003 – Washington, D.C.
– Today, the President signed into law House Joint Resolution 63,
the Compact of Free Association Amendments Act of 2003. This legislation
renews the Compacts of Free Association between the United States
and the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of the Marshall
Islands. Included in final signed version are Bordallo’s provisions
for Compact-impact reconciliation and Compact-impact reimbursement.
“The President’s signature
concludes a process of great importance to the peoples of Micronesia.
Today marks an historic day for Micronesia in its continuing relationship
with the United States. I am pleased that my colleagues and I in
the House Resources Committee were successful at improving the Compact
implementation package that was sent to Congress by the Administration.
I think we have made real strides forward in addressing Compact-impact
for Guam,” Bordallo said.
