H.R. 1595 TO RECEIVE A RECORDED VOTE ON MAY 8, 2007

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE—May 7, 2007Washington, D.C

The House of Representatives today considered H.R. 1595, the Guam World War II Loyalty Recognition Act, and delayed a vote on the measure until tomorrow, May 8.  The bill was taken up under a procedure called “suspension of the rules” which allows for a more expedited consideration of bills.  The bill received a voice vote, but the minority requested that a recorded vote be taken for final passage.  Under a previous agreement, recorded votes on today’s bills have been rolled over until Tuesday, May 8, 2007.

“We are going to work very hard over the next 24 hours to rally support for this bill on both sides of the aisle,” Congresswoman Bordallo said. “I am working closely with Chairman of the House Committee on Natural Resources Nick Rahall and Ranking Member Don Young, as well as the leadership offices to whip this vote.  Hopefully, we will have a positive outcome tomorrow.”

Bills brought up under suspension require a two-thirds vote for passage, or 290 votes.  The Democrats have 232 members and the Republicans have 201 members (two seats are vacant).  This will be the first vote on this issue for the full House of Representatives.
