News from Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo
Senate Confirms Tony Babauta as Assistant Secretary of the Interior
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 10, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –
Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the U.S. Senate has confirmed President Obama’s appointment of Anthony “Tony” Babauta to the position of Assistant Secretary of the Interior for the Insular Areas. Tony is the son of Antonio and Mary Babauta of Agat, Guam.
The President nominated Tony Babauta for this position on July 6, 2009. U.S. Senator Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources convened a full committee hearing on July 28, 2009 to consider the President’s nomination and to receive testimony from Tony Babauta. Congresswoman Bordallo proudly introduced Tony to the Committee on behalf of the people of Guam at his confirmation hearing.
On August 4, 2009, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources reported the nomination of Tony Babauta to the full Senate with the recommendation that he be confirmed. The elevation of responsibility for policy affecting the insular areas inside the Department of the Interior to the Assistant Secretary level was a decision called for and strongly supported by Congresswoman Bordallo and her colleagues representing the territories in Congress.
“We are elated by the Senate’s action to confirm Tony today,” Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo said.
“His confirmation is evidence of the confidence that President Obama and the Congress have in him. I congratulate Tony and I am confident that he will be an effective policy maker and leader on insular issues. His confirmation as the Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas is a great achievement and we look forward to working with him as he advances federal policies of the Obama Administration for Guam, the territories and the freely associated states. This is a proud day for our people.”
