Department of Justice Awards Judiciary of Guam $993,037 in Recovery Funds

Funds to Improve Rural Justice Information Sharing

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 15, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the Judiciary of Guam has been awarded $993,037 from the U.S. Department of Justice’s Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA). The recovery funds are administered by the BJA under The Assistance to Rural Law Enforcement to Combat Crime and Drugs Program, which helps rural states and areas prevent and combat crime, especially drug related crime, and provides training and technical assistance programs.  In total, the Government of Guam is eligible for more than $178,000,000 in financial assistance through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and to date has received $159,000,000 in financial assistance.

The grant funds awarded today will allow the Judiciary of Guam to hire six data entry clerks and an administrative assistant for Guam’s National Criminal Information Center Unit. The grant funds will also be used to initiate participation in the National Law Enforcement Teletype System (NLETS), which will allow the Judiciary of Guam to communicate directly with states on dispositions.  Participation in the NLETS will require upgrades to the current criminal justice information system. The upgrades will also help improve the Judiciary of Guam’s ability to process fingerprints for submission to the national databases by adding additional software and equipment.

“The funds awarded today will help improve the communication technology and criminal data processing on Guam” Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo said today. “The technological upgrades will improve communication between the Judiciary of Guam and other law enforcement agencies and I look forward to the continued implementation of the Recovery Act on Guam.”
