News from Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo
Bordallo Meets With Assistant Secretary Tony Babauta
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 17, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –
Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today met with newly-confirmed and appointed Assistant Secretary Anthony “Tony” Babauta, Assistant Secretary for the Insular Areas, at her office on Capitol Hill. President Obama nominated Tony for this position on July 6, 2009, and on August 4, 2009, the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources favorably reported the nomination of Tony to the full Senate. This was Congresswoman Bordallo’s first meeting with Tony since he was confirmed by the U.S. Senate on September 10, 2009.
“During his visit, Tony reiterated his commitment to advancing the federal policies of the Obama Administration for Guam, the territories, and the freely associated states,” Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo said today. “Tony has the distinction of being the first person from Guam or any of the U.S. territories to serve in this position. He has both the knowledge of government policy and the cultural sensitivity to ably serve in this capacity, and I look forward to working with him. Assistant Secretary Babauta informed me that he will be making a visit to Guam next week where he will meet with the Governor and the Guam legislature. He will continue on to Saipan and Palau after Guam to meet with local leaders. He has many challenges on his plate and I have every confidence that he will be an effective policy maker on insular issues.”
