DoD Announces Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 23, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo announced a plan by the Department of Defense to provide retroactive stop-loss pay.  According to the plan, which will be implemented by the respective services, Active Duty, Reserve Component and former servicemembers who had their enlistment extended or retirement suspended due to stop loss are eligible for this special pay, if they served on active duty between September 11, 2001 and September 30, 2009.

The Department of Defense indicates that applications for retroactive stop-loss claims were authorized to begin on October 21, 2009.  Eligible personnel will receive a payment of $500 per month for each month (or any portion of a month) that a member was retained on Active Duty due to stop loss.  The Department of Defense requires that applicants for retroactive pay must have been honorably discharged during fiscal year 2009 and provide documentation with their claim.  Family members of deceased servicemembers should contact the respective military service of their deceased family member for assistance in filing of any claims.

“This long-overdue action will provide needed relief for members of the military and their families who have given so much in the defense of our nation,” Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo said today. “The March 2009 announcement by the Department of Defense that is was ending its practice of stop loss was an important step to improving the readiness of our Armed Forces.  This announcement begins to appropriately recognize our servicemembers for their duty above and beyond the call of duty.  I am pleased that the Department of Defense has authorized retroactive stop-loss pay as we had directed in previous National Defense Authorization Acts.
