DOI Awards Financial Assistance to Guam
$16,827,026 for Compact Impact Funding

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 26, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo today announced that the U.S. Department of the Interior (DOI) has awarded the Government of Guam $16,827,026 in Compact Impact grant funding.  An additional $11,228,742 in Compact Impact funding was awarded to the Government of Hawaii.  These funds are allocated based on a formula derived from the latest enumeration of Compact migrants, which is conducted by the U.S. Census Bureau. The latest enumeration was released in 2009 and was used for the allocation of 2010 funds. Guam was awarded more than half of the $30 million dollars, which is shared by Hawaii, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and American Samoa.  The Honorable Tony Babauta, Assistant Secretary for Insular Areas, notified Governor Felix P. Camacho of the available funds.

“The Compact Impact funding of $16.8 million helps the Government of Guam in providing public services to citizens of the Freely Associated States residing on Guam,” Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo said today. “These funds may be used for education, healthcare and social services for FAS citizens.  I commend Governor Camacho for his work in securing this grant, and I thank Assistant Secretary Babauta for his commitment to address the Compact-Impact issue.  I look forward to working with Assistant Secretary Babauta and my colleagues in Congress on this issue.”
