Congresswoman Bordallo Chairs Hearing on Political Status Education Bill

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – November 5, 2009 – Washington, D.C. –

Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo, Chairwoman of the Subcommittee on Insular Affairs, Oceans, and Wildlife, today convened a hearing on H.R. 3940, a bill that would authorize the Secretary of the Interior to extend technical assistance grants and other assistance to facilitate a political status public education program on Guam.  Congresswoman Bordallo introduced H.R. 3940 on October 27, 2009.

The Honorable Felix P. Camacho, Governor of Guam, and Mr. Nikolao I. Pula, Director of the Office of Insular Affairs at the U.S. Department of the Interior, testified before the Subcommittee during today’s hearing.  The Honorable Judith T. Won Pat, Speaker of the 30th Guam Legislature, submitted a written testimony to the Subcommittee.

“This hearing allowed the members of my Subcommittee to hear from both the Governor of Guam and the Department of the Interior on H.R. 3940,” Congresswoman Madeleine Z. Bordallo said today. “Both Governor Camacho and Mr. Nikolao Pula expressed their support for H.R. 3940 and its intent to provide federal assistance for a comprehensive political status education program for Guam.  Further the Guam Legislature has introduced Resolution 15 in support of political status education, which was entered into the record.  Educating the public on the various political status options is important to the exercise of self-determination.  At this hearing, I was joined by the other Delegates from the Territories and they expressed their full support for H.R. 3940.”
