President Obama was wise to re-consider his campaign promise to reinstate the controversial assault weapons ban, which some gun-control groups are trying to link to drug violence in Mexico.

With drug violence south of the border at a crisis level, some in Congress are looking at a back door push for the return of a previously failed assault weapons ban. Ending violence and bloodshed by lawless drug cartels is the issue, not a divisive return to policies that infringe upon the American people’s Second Amendment rights.

We need strong enforcement by U.S. and Mexican authorities of common-sense security laws already on the books.

While we all can agree that the violence in Mexico must be contained, law abiding citizens who possess guns for enjoyment, protection, and personal collection should not have their Constitutional rights infringed upon because of violent drug cartels.

Kevin Works to Stop Social Security Fraud

From the Montgomery County News,

U.S. Congressman Kevin Brady (R-The Woodlands) met today in Houston with officials from the Social Security Administration ahead of a congressional hearing next week to examine fraud in the federal disability program. Brady, who requested the hearing of the House Ways & Means Subcommittee on Social Security, says scammers may be draining up to $11 billion from the Social Security Disability Insurance Trust Fund that helps more than seven million disabled Americans.
“We have a responsibility to taxpayers and the truly disabled to make sure these precious dollars are not lost to fraud and those trying to game the system”, said Brady, a member of the Social Security panel.

Trade War Dispute with Mexico?

Bloomberg news reported this week on a looming trade dispute with Mexico and Kevin shared his thoughts,

Mexico set the stage for the first trade war of President Barack Obama’s administration by slapping import tariffs on $2.4 billion of U.S. goods in retaliation for a ban of its trucks from American roads.
The tariffs, on about 90 items from 40 states, were imposed by Economy Minister Gerardo Ruiz Mateos yesterday after the U.S. suspended a program to allow Mexican 18-wheelers to deliver goods across the border. U.S. Republican lawmakers said Mexico, which didn’t provide details, would impose tariffs on farm goods such as rice, beef, wheat and beans...
…“Retaliation makes these U.S. products significantly less competitive and could close the Mexican market to many of our exports,” Representative Kevin Brady of Texas, the top Republican on the trade subcommittee of the House Ways and Means Committee, said in a statement yesterday. Brady said the tariffs could affect wheat, beans, beef and rice imports.

Keep Political Hands off Vital Census Data

Kevin wrote the following in an article posted on The Hill’s Congress Blog yesterday,

As Americans lose their jobs in this economy, they shouldn’t have to worry about whether or not someone in Washington is ‘spinning’ the unemployment data to fit a political agenda. People are scared. While Washington wastes time and money on such issues as Interstate Chimpanzee Transport, they are worried about putting food on the table. What they shouldn’t have to worry about is the White House seizing control over the U.S. Census Bureau and turning the government statistics we all rely on into just another political tool.

WASHINGTON, DC – Congressman Kevin Brady (R-TX) today issued the following statement on President Obama’s decision to allow taxpayer funding of human embryonic stem cell research:

“Like many other Americans I believe a human embryo is human life. I’ve welcomed recent scientific breakthroughs that basically eliminate the need for human embryos as a source of stem cells. I will continue to urge President Obama and Congress to invest our tax dollars firmly behind non-embryonic research which has the greatest potential for creating life-saving medical breakthroughs quicker and without ethical controversy.”

In the second House Ways & Means Committee Stimulus Spending Hearing in as many days, Congressman Kevin Brady took on the Obama Administration's mantra that they inherited massive deficits. Brady, who also serves as the Lead House Republican on the Joint Economic Committee, questioned Office of Management and Budget Director Peter Orszag about these disingenuous statements. Brady told OMB Director Orszag that "you inherited the $1.2 trillion deficit from President Bush AND the Democrat-led Congress." Brady also took on the Administration's Attacks on U.S. Energy Producers telling Orszag "I just don't think it makes sense to shoot holes in the traditional energy boat in which we are riding as a country in hopes a renewable boat will come along in ten years. We need to be encouraging both."

Kevin's Take on the President's Not-Quite-State-of-the-Union-Address

Kevin's reaction to President Barack Obama's address to a joint session of Congress Tuesday night was mixed. In terms of the economic plan laid out by Mr. Obama, it is hard to envision how it would do anything besides add to the federal deficit. "You can't launch massive new programs and say we're going to pay for it with…" taxes on the richest Americans, according to Kevin.

On the other hand, as the Beaumont Enterprise reports:
"Overall, you give the new president the benefit of the doubt," Brady said, adding that Obama was "on target" in addressing the educational needs of young Americans and the housing concerns.

The sizeable grants are targeted towards economic recovery for regions most severely affected by the hurricanes, floods and other natural disasters that occurred in 2008. The Port of Beaumont will use the grant to construct railroad infrastructure on its Orange County site, and the Port of Orange will use the funds to develop new cargo transportation infrastructure at its facilities on the Sabine River, according to a news release.

Yesterday’ Fox News 26 hosted and article talking about tax refunds this year with Congressman Brady attributing the tax refund frenzy to our hard economic times and hoping everyone gets their fair share

More Filing Taxes Early

Last Edited: Monday, 09 Feb 2009, 9:27 PM CST
Created On: Monday, 09 Feb 2009, 7:10 PM CST
By, Sally MacDonald

HOUSTON - Nationwide, there's a rush to the refund. The bad economy has tax preparers expecting a busy next few weeks. Now that most of us have gotten our tax return forms, families are already thinking about how to make the most of their tax refund.

The car industry and banks have gotten a bailout. This year Houstonians are hoping to bailout themselves with a tax refund. "In these tough economic times, I want people to get back every dollar they're owed, and I want people to get it back fast," said Congressman Kevin Brady, (R) Texas.

The office manager of H&R Block says across Houston employees are tackling the taxes of about 6% more customers than it did at this time last year. "Basically they're saying they need the money to pay the bills," said Marian Clarke.

Even procrastinators are filing early. We found students banking on a refund to pay their tuition. "I'll use it for tuition and bills. I'm not going to go around buying crazy stuff," said Carlos Ramirez, 23.

The unpredictable economy has created new tax issues, like what if you lost your job and are looking for a new one? "Job search expenses are deductible and can be deducted on your tax return. Things like getting your resume written, traveling for interviews and those kinds of things should be documented," said Clarke.

Free help is also available. Low and moderate income taxpayers can qualify through the program, "Free File Alliance." Experts recommend filing online to speed up the process.

H&R Block says four out of every five completed tax returns brought to them are wrong. Employees will give your return what they call a "second look" for $29.

Obama should reconsider bloated stimulus package

More targeted spending could benefit U.S. economy

The following story, penned by Kevin, appeared in the Tuesday edition of the Houston Chronicle...

President Barack Obama met with House Republicans Tuesday. We urged him to seriously rethink the bloated $816 billion economic stimulus bill that is being rushed through the House this week as lobbyists swarm the Capitol to secure their piece of the ever-growing stimulus pie.

As much as we hope a stimulus bill will work, the economic reality is that they rarely do. Since World War II, Congress has enacted at least eight economic stimulus measures. The economic impact, what little could be directly attributed to them, typically came well after the recessions were effectively over. However well-intended the latest attempt is, economists are sounding the alarm it will miss the mark as well. In fact, it may do more harm than good as middle class families and small businesses ultimately shoulder the higher taxes needed to pay for this spending spree.

Not only does this bill fail to meet the president’s goal of “temporary, targeted and timely,” much of it sets permanently higher spending levels for federal and state governments. It gets worse. The bipartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates a mere one-fifth will be spent this year, when the economy needs it the most. How timely is that?

There is a lot of frivolous spending in this bill. I can’t find an economist anywhere who will admit that contraceptives, zoo exhibits and repairs to the Jefferson Memorial are serious economic boosts.

While stimulus measures tend to be more of a political than economic benefit, this one puts more money into buying new art than tax incentives to help small businesses invest in new computers, equipment and machines. Even the much touted investment in roads and highway infrastructure is a mere 3.5 percent of the total bill. School construction is also being touted as a major benefit, but only $14 billion of the $100 billion in education spending is for building new elementary and secondary schools — which is a state and local responsibility anyway.

Workers, meanwhile, get to keep on average a meager $1.35 more a day of their money, which won’t send families rushing to the mall. Yet their government spends in this bill, with interest, an amount almost equal to all the personal income taxes paid by Americans annually. In other words, paying for this stimulus would require nearly doubling all income taxes for one year — not just on “the wealthy,” but on all taxpayers.

Our country’s deficit this year will be the highest in peacetime since 1930. As horrible as we Republicans were about controlling spending, in just two years congressional Democrats will have generated deficits greater than the first six years of the Bush administration. When the stimulus is added in, America will be left to beg the rest of the world for nearly $3 trillion in Treasury notes over the next year just as finance experts are growing increasingly uncomfortable with the international view of the dollar.

If the political winds insist “we do something,” there is a better idea. A smaller, more targeted stimulus could replace the minuscule $1.35 a day work credit with a real reduction in the two lowest tax brackets. That way a two-earner working family could keep up to $3,200 a year of its hard-earned money. If we give small businesses with less than 500 workers a 20 percent income tax deduction, they can keep good employees on the payroll and make much needed investments in equipment. Without the pork and state bailouts, we can create a $7,500 housing tax credit for new and existing homes to help stabilize that critical market.

Since there is no such thing as free money, someone is eventually going to have to pay for all of this. I am urging the president to assure the American people that taxes will not have to be raised to pay for all this new spending. Instead, Congress should be directed to seek an end to wasteful spending in Washington, to sunset obsolete agencies, eliminate duplicate programs and stop abuses in contracts and earmarks. That’s a better way to achieve President Obama’s inauguration call for a new era of responsibility.

One way Congress can help restore confidence in Wall Street and in our financial institutions is by getting America’s own finances in order. The president is right to focus on the economy. Members of both parties should set aside partisanship and work toward the common goal of a stronger American economy.

The Congressional Life

Yesterday’s edition of the Conroe Courier carried an article by Lucretia Cardenas which gave readers a behind-the-scenes look at Congressional life – with Kevin as the focus! Cardenas writes,

If anyone thought the life of a congressman was glamorous, they haven’t spoken to the man who represents District 8 in Texas.
With three roommates – and one car between them – Congressman Kevin Brady, R-The Woodlands, likens his living conditions in the nation’s capital to a bachelors’ college apartment.
No one cooks and no one is assigned household chores. Each of the four Republican congressmen has their own bedroom and bathroom, and most survive on a diet of popcorn, cold pizza and an occasional beer.
“It’s like ‘The Odd Couple’ twice over,” Brady said.

When their wives and children come to visit, a housekeeper is hired to thoroughly scrub down the townhome. But usually the wives still find something to improve. For example, Brady’s wife Cathy was visiting for the inauguration and, after taking a look at the refrigerator, left her husband a grocery list.

Congressman Kevin Brady released the following statement after getting word from the White House that Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean were going to be released:

"These officers have served enough time for the mistakes they made and I thank President Bush for giving these officers their freedom back by commuting their excessive sentences to time served. No law enforcement officer should ever fear an enhanced handgun sentencing guidelines being used against them over a split-second, line of duty decision."

Kevin Discusses Economic Recovery with Governor Mitt Romney and eBay CEO

The first hearing of the House Republican economic recovery working group provided some excellent food for thought on how to get our economy moving again without passing a huge bill onto our grandkids. I had the pleasure of asking Governor Mitt Romney and former eBay CEO Meg Whitman for their advice during Thursday’s hearing.

Congressman Brady Works to Make Right a Law that’s Wrong for our Tech-Driven World

There’s a right way and a wrong way to go about testing cell phone jamming technology. Why is this important? The technology liberation front explains:

This technology sounds like an excellent solution to a serious problem: The illicit use of cell phones inside correctional facilities by prisoners across the country. In particular, the technology appears to be “directional,” meaning that unlike traditional jammers, which simply block signals within a certain radius around the jammer, this technology appears to be capable of blocking signals inside the confines of a particular room or building. In fact, I’m sure millions of Americans would love to see such technologies implemented in cinemas, theatres, and other performing arts venues across the country. I, for one, am tired of having the exquisite acoustic delicacies of Bach interrupted by annoying ring tones, such as the (painfully) immortal “Who Let the Dogs Out?”

Kevin realizes the need remove FCC roadblocks to cell phone jamming technology.

Boehner Appoints Rep. Kevin Brady as Senior House Republican on the Joint Economic Committee

Posted: (01-12-2009)

House Republican Leader John Boehner (R-OH) appointed Rep. Kevin Brady (R-TX) as Senior House Republican on the Joint Economic Committee (JEC) today and issued the following statement:

“Kevin Brady has been a leader in the effort to create jobs for American families and root out waste, fraud, and abuse in government programs, and he will bring a wealth of experience and wisdom to this post. The American people know we can’t simply borrow and spend our way back to prosperity, and I’m pleased that Kevin will continue to play a key leadership role in our efforts to produce an economic plan that will serve the interests of middle-class families and small businesses across the country.”

Brady, a senior member of the House Ways & Means Committee, was also recently appointed by Boehner to the House Select Committee on Earmark Reform.

Upon receiving this news, Congressman Brady had this to say:

“I’m humbled by Leader Boehner’s appointment as the leading House Republican on the only joint House-Senate committee that deals with America’s economy. These are troubled times for our country, and I intend to be a voice for solid, pro-growth strategies that get our economy back on its feet without burying our future under a mountain of federal debt.”

Kevin Skeptical of Stimulus Proposals

Courier of Montgomery County Posted: (01-06-2009)

Kevin Brady is, as yet, not a fan of the new stimulus proposal germinating in the President Elect’s office. “They are talking about three-quarters of a trillion dollars that we don’t have,” said Brady, as he spoke to the Prime Timers during their luncheon Monday at The Woodlands United Methodist Church. Brady said the same economists who “got us into this mess” are “telling us to spend more.”

Israel Has a Right to Defend Itself

Courier of Montgomery County Posted: (01-05-2009)

Israel is well within its rights as a sovereign nation to defend itself from terrorist attacks. Since the Egyptian-mediated truce ended a little more than 10 days ago, Hamas has bombarded Israel with thousands of rockets – one even struck an empty kindergarten in Beersheba, Israel’s fifth-largest city.

While I continue to hold out hope for a peaceful solution, I am disheartened by Hamas statements such as ‘Rockets will be on your daily agenda’.

Kevin Fights for Earmark Reform

Posted: (12-29-2008)

The first congressman to post his earmarks on the internet for all to see, Congressman Kevin Brady’s ongoing fight for earmark reform has prompted Minority Leader Boehner to appoint him to serve on a Select Committee that will put together a top to bottom earmark system reform plan. Last year, Congressman Brady cut his own earmarks by 75% funding only those projects already near completion.

Tough Times for Newspapers

New York Times Posted: (12-18-2008)

Cash-strapped newspapers facing tough financial straits are being forced to restructure. Racing to cut costs as they lose revenue, most have decided that their future lies in local news, not national or international events. That has put a bull’s-eye on expensive Washington bureaus. The result is that there are fewer reporters in the nation’s capitol city holding elected officials to account. This state of affairs has not escaped the notice of Congressman Brady.

In a New York Times story published yesterday entitled, “Big News in Washington, but Far Fewer Cover It”, Kevin, who has seen The Houston Chronicle’s team in Washington drop to three people, from nine, in two years, remarked, “From an informed public standpoint, it’s alarming. They’re letting go those with the most institutional knowledge, which helps reporters hold elected officials accountable.”

After meeting last Friday with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials in Houston, Kevin Brady, along with other local congress members, voiced their encouragement and support of the good work ICE has done in recent months to identify and detain illegal immigrants (see image)- but the group of determined lawmakers continue to push for further reforms within the system and the agency.

As the Houston Chronicle reports, Kevin made it clear after the meeting that, "...the delegation wants ICE to provide information by January on measures to ensure that illegal immigrants charged with serious crimes are not making bail...Brady added that they also want to make sure illegal immigrants convicted of crimes - and eligible for deportation - are removed from the country."

Your community will get 100% federal help for Ike Clean-up

They want to do WHAT to my 401K?

Posted: (11-19-2008)

401kA plan to force you to hand over your 401K to the Federal Government is being reviewed in Washington. It has already had a hearing before a Congressional Sub-Committee – and may soon be open to broader debate. Thankfully, Congressman Brady is on the front lines defending Americans from intrusive regulation such as this.

When reached for comment by 39 News, Congressman Brady said, "There are some in Washington that hate the thought that you and I would have our own retirement plan.  They want the government to do it, or they think people still work for a business for 40 years and retire.  Times have changed that way.  You and I need a backpack of retirement and health care plans that goes with us from job to job that we control.  So there is just this movement in Washington to nationalize everything and I think the public is going to fight it."

How about an I-pod approach to fixing our 8-track worker verification system?

Posted: (09-12-2008)

Rep. Kevin Brady, says he's pushing legislation in Congress to require the nation's 7.4 million employers to electronically verify the identity and immigration status of newly hired employees. But in contrast to some rival worker verification proposals, the plan Brady backs would only screen prospective workers using the records of the Social Security system -- and not the Department of Homeland Security.

The Republican lawmaker says his approach, "...rejects the 'Big Brother' solution'' sought by sponsors of some other measures on Capitol Hill.

The Republican lawmaker says his approach, ...rejects the 'Big Brother' solution sought by sponsors of some other measures on Capitol Hill

This is co-sponsoring with a number of Republican and Democratic colleagues in the House will "...ensure that we do not have an eight-track tape player system in an iPod world."

The most comprehensive version of competing electronic verification proposals would require employers to submit the names of both existing employees and new employees to databases at the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security in order to get the green light to hire the workers.

Rep. Sam Johnson, a fellow Texas Republican co-sponsoring the measure, calls reliance on Social Security records the only way to confirm U.S. citizenship for American citizens.
