Statement of Purpose

  • To build awareness around the issues of school health and safety among House members and staff.

  • To create a voice within Congress on the issue of school health and safety, and to support legislation that would strengthen community and school-based efforts to improve the health of school children and keep students safer while they are at school.

  • To identify ways to effectively raise awareness of school health and safety issues in our districts, and work cooperatively with school administrators, teachers, school nurses, parents, students and community groups to improve children's health and reduce injuries in schools.

Possible Topics to be Addressed

  • Bus Safety
  • Immunizations
  • Mental Health Issues in Schools
  • Missing & Exploited children
  • Nutrition in schools
  • Playground Safety
  • The Role of the School Nurse
  • School Sports Safety

Working closely with the National Safe Kids Campaign, the Consumer Products Safety Commission, and the National Association of School Nurses, the Caucus will hold briefings for Members of Congress and staff. Additionally, the Caucus will serve as a resource for House offices on ways to more effectively educate constituents on school health and safety issues.
