Congressman Michael Capuano Establishes the Congressional Caucus on Korea

January 22, 2003 -- Congressman Michael Capuano (D-MA) established the Congressional Caucus on Korea (CCK) to address the important political, social and economic issues that are emerging on the Korean peninsula. Congressman Vito Fossella (R-NY) will serve as Co-Chair.

"In light of recent events, it is even more important that Congress work together on issues impacting America's relationship with both the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and our long-standing friend, the Republic of Korea," said Congressman Capuano.

The Republic of Korea (ROK) is a firm American ally in promoting and supporting peace, stability and democracy in East Asia. It is also a major trade partner with the United States. Finally, with the continued deployment of the 8th Army and other military personnel to South Korea, the United States maintains a commitment to safeguarding our allies in ROK.

The Caucus is dedicated to:

Advancing common goals of democracy with the people and governments of the Korean peninsula;
Strengthening our relationship with South Korea and its neighbors in order to enhance mutual defense;
Establishing policies and issuing policy statements on Congressional legislation relating to Korea and Korean Americans;
Closely monitoring the North Korean refugee situation to aid those who seek political asylum;
Informing all Members of Congress about continuing developments on Korean peninsula and provide a formal structure to coordinate Congress's efforts to achieve all of the stated objectives of the Caucus.

"I look forward to working on these issues with my colleagues on the CCK," Congressman Capuano said.
