Rep. Mike Capuano Condemns Chinese Government For Treatment of Dr. Yang Jianli
June 4, 2003 -- Today, on the 14th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square uprising, Congressman Mike Capuano condemned the Chinese government for their treatment of Dr. Yang Jianli, President of the Boston-based Foundation for China in the 21st Century. Dr. Yang Jianli, a prominent participant at Tiananmen Square, has been detained in China for over a year.
"I join my colleagues today in condemning Beijing for its prolonged detention of Dr. Yang Jianli. His important work in human rights advocacy is widely recognized by the international community. The Chinese authorities are withholding information about his whereabouts and they have refused to set forth the charges against him. He has been denied access to his wife and children, who are American citizens. I am outraged at China's persecution of Dr. Yang and its blatant violations of human rights time and time again," stated Congressman Capuano.
The United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention ruled yesterday that Chinese authorities violated their own laws because they did not provide Dr. Yang or his family with a formal notice of detention or access to a lawyer. Furthermore, the UN Working Group found that the Chinese government held Dr. Yang over its own maximum detention time limit. Rep. Capuano called upon the Chinese government to immediately take steps to remedy the situation regarding Dr. Yang Jianli.
"We must emphasize to the People's Republic of China that our relations, whether economic, political or cultural, hinge on our mutual commitment to the rule of law and to the principles of liberty, justice and human rights," stated Congressman Capuano.
