City of Somerville Names Early Childhood Center in Honor of Congressman Capuano

September 2, 2003 -- On Tuesday September 2, 2003 the City of Somerville officially dedicated the Michael E. Capuano Early Childhood Center, located on Glen Street in Somerville.

"I am humbled and honored to have this facility bear my name. I want to extend my sincerest thanks to the many individuals who worked tirelessly over the years to improve our school system, all of whom deserve recognition today," stated Congressman Capuano.

The new school will serve the city's youngest students. It contains day care facilities, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten and first grade classrooms. It also features a music room, computer lab and an art room.

Congressman Capuano served as Mayor of Somerville from 1990 -- 1998, when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. During his tenure as Mayor, he made education a priority by upgrading school buildings, increasing access to technology for all students and lowering average class sizes to 19. In Congress, he has continued the fight to improve public education.

The Capuano School opens to students on Wednesday September 3rd.
