Congressman Mike Capuano was honored last night by Generations United for his success in passing legislation making it easier for grandparents raising their grandchildren to find affordable housing. Generations United is a national organization that advocates on behalf of intergenerational families. They helped secure additional support for the legislation.
"I am truly honored to receive this recognition and want to thank Generations United for all of their assistance in making these important initiatives a reality," stated Congressman Capuano.
Congressman Capuano's provisions were included in the "American Dream Downpayment Act", which became law last year. Specifically, the legislation directs the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to create a nationwide intergenerational housing demonstration program and to train HUD personnel so that they may better assist families headed by grandparents or other relatives. It also requires HUD to conduct a study on the housing needs of these unique families. Generations United will work with other advocates in helping HUD implement these new programs.
The U.S. Census Bureau reports that over 6 million children are being raised by their grandparents or another relative. These intergenerational families live in rural areas, inner cities and suburbs. They come from all races and ethnicities and live in every state in the nation.
"Many of these grandparents live on fixed incomes. They are dealing with the high cost of prescription drugs and health care as well the high cost of diapers, formula, baby clothes and school supplies. We must do all we can to help them as they raise the next generation of Americans," stated Congressman Capuano.
