Statement on Republican-Sponsored Bill H.R. 4241: the Deficit Reduction Act
Republican Budget Reconciliation Cuts Irresponsible
November 18, 2005
H.R. 4241, a $50 billion package of spending cuts, is the Republican-controlled House's effort to confront what has become the largest budget deficit in our nation's history. However, the cuts are deep and irresponsible.
- Medicaid was cut by $11.4 billion. Many of those impacted by this reduction are children.
- $14.3 billion was cut from the student loan program
- Child support enforcement programs were cut by almost $5 billion.
- The food stamp and school lunch programs suffered a $796 million cut.
Most troubling, all of these reductions will offset the tax cuts that George Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress insist on pursuing, and will do nothing to trim our deficit. Even with these cuts, the deficit will increase by more than $100 billion, primarily because the President continues to seek additional tax cuts.
