PRESS RELEASE

Reps. Mike Capuano and Mike Turner Establish Congressional Former Mayors Caucus

May 23, 2006

Representatives Mike Capuano (D-MA) and Mike Turner (R-OH) are establishing the Congressional Former Mayors Caucus. Congressman Capuano is the former Mayor of Somerville, MA and Congressman Turner is the former Mayor of Dayton, OH. They were joined by Living Cities — the National Community Development Initiative, in announcing the formation of the Caucus.

"The Caucus will be a forum to highlight the issues impacting our nation's cities. As the former Mayor of Somerville, I have experienced firsthand how federal policies impact local communities. By bringing together Members with backgrounds in city government, we can bring a local perspective to issues we're debating in Congress. I look forward to working with Congressman Turner and other former mayors in this effort," stated Congressman Capuano.

Representative Turner stated, "As the former Mayor of Dayton and Chairman of Speaker Hastert's Saving America's Cities working group, I am excited about the opportunity to work with Members with similar background to address the needs of our nation's cities and towns. The Former Mayors Caucus is another outlet that will allow me to continue my work with cities."

Mayors make difficult decisions every day that directly impact the lives of their constituents. The Former Mayors Caucus will create a forum for former Mayors to effectively address the broad range of policy issues impacting cities and towns throughout the country.

Living Cities' membership includes government agencies, financial institutions and foundations that work to revitalize America's cities. Living Cities works in partnership with residents, local governments, businesses and nonprofits to create strategic investment opportunities for improved housing and business growth.

Congressman Mike Capuano was elected Mayor of Somerville five times. He served from January of 1990 through December of 1998. During his tenure, Congressman Capuano stabilized the City's finances and as a result, Somerville's bond rating was upgraded 4 times in 9 years. An urban environmentalist, Capuano established the first locally based Environmental Strike Force. Searching for ways to expand the City's affordable housing stock, he established an Affordable Housing Task Force. He enhanced the landscape of Somerville by taking down blighted properties, planting thousands of trees and increasing recreational space. He also implemented a number of family-friendly personnel policies, including paid parental leave, flex-time and job sharing.
