Speaker Pelosi Appoints Congressman Mike Capuano Chairman of Special Task Force on Ethics Enforcement
January 31, 2007
Today House Speaker Nancy Pelosi appointed Congressman Mike Capuano (D-MA) Chairman of the Special Task Force on Ethics Enforcement. This bipartisan task force, which will report back to the House by May 1st, is charged with exploring the creation of an outside ethics enforcement entity. As part of this process, the task force will study ethics enforcement models found in state legislatures and in private entities.
"This month, the House passed important ethics reform measures. Strong and consistent enforcement of those measures must be a part of that process. I am honored that Speaker Pelosi has asked me to chair this Special Task Force on Ethics Enforcement and I am eager to get to work," stated Congressman Mike Capuano.
When Congressman Capuano was Mayor of Somerville, Massachusetts he authored the state's first locally based ethics ordinance, requiring the City's elected officials and certain appointed officials to complete detailed statements of financial interest. In November, Speaker Pelosi appointed Congressman Capuano to head the transition as Democrats prepared to become the Majority in Congress. He is also Chair of the Democratic Caucus' Committee on Organization, Study and Review which is charged with interpreting and updating the rules of the Democratic Caucus.
Other members of the bipartisan task force include: Rep. Bobby Scott (D-VA), Rep. Marty Meehan (D-MA), Rep. Betty McCollum (D-MN), Rep. Lamar Smith (R-TX), Rep. Dave Camp (R-MI), Rep. Dave Hobson (R-OH), and Rep. Todd Tiahrt (R-KS).
