COSTELLO ASKS GAO TO EXAMINE FUTUREGEN DECISION
Washington - U.S. Congressman Jerry F. Costello (D-IL) joined other senior members of the House Science Committee in requesting the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to examine Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman’s recent decision to restructure the FutureGen project. As proposed, FutureGen was to be a public/private partnership to build a 275-megawatt prototype power plant with emissions equal to those of natural gas. In December, the FutureGen Alliance of Energy Companies named Mattoon, Illinois, as the site for the project over three other finalists, two of which were in Texas.

The letter to Comptroller General David Walker asks for information on, among other things, how DOE allocated FutureGen funding, why cost estimates increased, the goals of the restructured FutureGen program and the role of the FutureGen Alliance going forward.

The letter states:

“The recent FutureGen announcement takes the program in a dramatically different direction. The reasons for this abrupt change in the FutureGen program are unclear. However, the Administration claims that increases in cost estimates for the program were a contributing factor in this decision. We wish to have a better understanding of the developments in the program that led to this recent decision and an examination of the Administration’s rationale and plans for restructuring this program.”

“I appreciate the assistance of my Science Committee colleagues in our efforts to get answers about this terrible decision,” said Costello. “To date, we have not received a sufficient explanation as to this dramatic change of course, which will set back the development of carbon sequestration technologies by at least three years. I look forward to working with the GAO to get these answers.”
