“This is incredibly disappointing. The night after President Bush makes a plea for bipartisanship in his State of the Union Address, he abandons perhaps the most bipartisan initiative of his presidency. Cutting and running on a project that is critical to our nation’s energy future will set back our efforts to develop carbon sequestration technologies, which are vital to enable the cleanest possible use of America’s vast coal reserves, and it will not inspire confidence in other companies seeking to collaborate with the Department of Energy.
“It is hard to believe that this decision would have been made if the final site was in Texas, which makes this politics at its worst. To start over now is a tremendous waste of time and money. The Illinois Congressional delegation has spent five years working with state and local officials, the Alliance, and the Department of Energy to develop this project. We will continue to look for ways to press forward, because this is a matter of great importance to Illinois and the nation. But make no mistake - this is a dark day for this administration."
