What's Coming Up

As many of you have seen, Washington, DC is experiencing heavy rains that have flooded subway tunnels and downtown streets, toppled a 100-year old tree at the White House, and caused several key federal agencies (Justice and Commerce Departments, IRS, EPA) to close their doors for the day – even the National Archives and Smithsonian had to shut down (don’t worry, nothing important got wet-- we think).

Today, Rep. Delahunt was in New York City leading a congressional delegation that participated in a number of high-level meetings with top United Nations officials.  The good news is that those meetings went very well; the bad news, is that his flight to Washington is delayed and it appears that he’s going to miss this evening’s votes.  No one could have predicted the foul weather (forecast for the balance of the week) – now it appears, that these conditions could threaten the rest of the legislative calendar (including a coincidental, and ironic, vote on  a bill reauthorizing the National Flood Insurance program).  We’ll keep you updated through the list-serve (go to www.house.gov/delahunt to sign up).

With the annual July 4th Congressional recess right around the corner, expect a flurry of last-minute activity on the House floor this week.    Just a reminder, there will be no What’s Coming Up next week, but we’ll resume our regular updates starting July 9.

In the meantime, we thought we’d pass along a shameless plug for a television show that features some local folks doing what they love to do.  Recently, Delahunt and his staff have become fans of the Discovery Channel’s new show, Lobstermen: Jeopardy at Sea – which featured several crews from Hyannis in the first episode.  Check your local listings for air time.

Monday

• House votes on $8.3 billion Coast Guard authorization bill which includes $1.6 billion for fleet modernizations – Coast Guard operates second oldest fleet in the world (North Korea, Iran and Italy have better navies).  Bill also contains strengthened CG role in siting off shore wind project in Nantucket Sound.
• House also votes on bills honoring 2006 Stanley Cup & NBA champs and vets COLA adjustments.
• IRAQ WATCH returns to the House floor, earlier this year it joined forces with the 30something group.  Delahunt and his colleagues will be live on CSPAN after the last votes around 9 pm; later he joins with 30somethings to discuss domestic needs around 11 pm.
