DeLauro on the Issues | Legislation Legislation Introduced by Congresswoman DeLauro107th Congress | 106th Congress | Search for Legislation 107th CongressThe Protecting the Food Supply from Bioterrorism Act, H.R. 3184 Back to LegislationThe events of September 11th highlighted the critical need to ensure the safety of our nation’s food supply. While the FDA is responsible for the vast majority of the food Americans consume, it does not have the tools it needs to ensure our safety. For example, FDA does not have the authority to detain or recall food it believes is contaminated. In addition, unlike the USDA, FDA does not require food processors overseas to have the same food safety standards as we do here in the United States. The Protecting the Food Supply from Bioterrorism Act would require registration of any facility engaged in handling or processing food ; give FDA the authority to immediately detain and recall food it believes is adulterated or misbranded; ensure that food produced overseas has the same level of protection as U.S. standards; and invest in the development of technologies that would quickly identify agents of foodborne illness, increase funding at the National Institutes of Health to expand programs concerning foodborne illness, and award food safety grants to expand the number of States participating in networks that enhance Federal, State, and local food safety efforts. The legislation currently has 5 cosponsors.
