DeLauro on the Issues | Legislation Legislation Introduced by Congresswoman DeLauro107th Congress | 106th Congress | Search for Legislation 106th CongressThe Paycheck Fairness Act, H.R. 2397 Back to LegislationThe Paycheck Fairness Act would amend the Equal Pay Act of the Fair Labor Standards Act and the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to provide more effective remedies to workers who are not being paid equal wages for doing equal work. Despite the Equal Pay Act passed in 1963, women continue to earn just 74 cents for every dollar earned by men. In fact, a woman has to work nearly 16 months to earn an amount equal to the amount a man earns in just 12 months. The Paycheck Fairness Act recognizes that equal pay is not only an issue of fairness for women, but one of fairness for working families. In 1995, 72 percent of all two parent families with children were supported by a working father and a working mother. In the same year, an additional 7.6 million families were dependent entirely on the income of a working mother. The Paycheck Fairness Act could make all the difference for working families struggling to make ends meet in their everyday lives.
