Product
Safety Raised at Meeting Between Bush & Hu
Washington
,
D.C.
–
Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement following
President George W. Bush’s meeting today with President Hu Jintao of
China
and their discussion of product safety in light of repeated recalls of imported
products including toys and food. DeLauro had urged
President Bush to take advantage of this meeting to discuss the problems with
imports from China and how China can strengthen its product safety regulation
during her phone conversations with the President’s Chief of Staff, Joshua B.
Bolten, and and Consumer Product Safety Commission Acting Chairwoman Nancy Nord.
“It
is important that President Bush and President Hu Jintao of
China
discussed the recent problems involving imported products from
China
. These endless recalls of toys and food products have affected millions
of children and families across the country and warrant the urgent attention
from the highest levels of government.
“This
conversation should be the first step toward preventing tainted products from
entering our homes. The Administration should move quickly to identify
harmful products before they reach the marketplace and test children who may
have been exposed to contaminated toys.
“Additionally,
this high-level conversation should be the precursor to more extensive
discussions next week during the 2nd biennial Sino-U.S. Consumer
Product Safety Summit.”
