DeLauro: 2nd Stimulus Package Needed to Get Economy Growing

Washington , D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement on April’s job losses.

“As the economy shed jobs for the fourth month in a row, we are clearly feeling the full effect of President Bush’s failed economic policies.  This month employment is down 20,000 – bumping up the total job losses this year to over a quarter of a million jobs – with the construction and manufacturing sectors continuing to be hit hard – dropping another 110,000 jobs.

“While families in Connecticut and across the country will begin to receive their rebate checks from the stimulus plan, which Congress moved quickly to pass earlier this year, these families still face rising fuel and food costs.  For many families this means cutting back on other purchases. The housing market continues to raise concerns – there has been a drop in home sales and prices that, unfortunately, does not seem to be abating.

“That is why my colleagues and I in Congress are looking at a second economic recovery effort with a balanced set of economic stimulus measures beginning with extending unemployment insurance providing relief to homeowners facing lost value in their homes or foreclosure, funding infrastructure projects which create highway construction jobs, and helping American families make ends meet.

“Working together, we can get this country’s economy back on-track.”
