DeLauro Commends House Commitment to

Expanding the Child Tax Credit

Washington, D.C. – Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (CT-3) applauded the Child Tax Credit provision included in The Energy and Tax Extenders Act of 2008 (H.R. 6049).  Specifically, the provisions would lower the earnings threshold for Child Tax Credit eligibility to $8,500 – expanding who is eligible to apply for the credit. Currently, a single parent earning the minimum wage and working full time in 2008 will earn no refund because he or she will not meet the $12,050 earnings threshold. The House passed the bill on a bipartisan basis.

In Connecticut , the expansion of the credit means 20,900 children will now be newly eligible for the credit and 62,300 children will receive a larger credit.

“The Child Tax Credit is about providing relief to the working families that need it the most.  With this provision – lowering the earnings threshold – 2.9 million additional children will be eligible for the credit; and the families of 10 million others will receive larger refunds.  By expanding the Child Tax Credit we have a real opportunity to make a difference in the lives of children across the country.”
