The Safe Food Act, H.R. 1671   Back to Legislation

According to the Center for Disease Control, 76 million people get sick, 325,000 are hospitalized, and 5,000 die from food-related illnesses. Estimated costs associated with medical expenses and losses in productivity from food-borne illnesses are between $5.6 and $9.4 billion annually. Currently, there is no comprehensive food safety agency to address this problem. 12 different agencies, all with different missions and standards, work to ensure food safety. The Safe Food Act establishes an independent agency, the Food Safety Administration, with the responsibility for all federal food safety activities. The bill now has 32 co-sponsors.
