Resolution In Support of Social Security and Its Benefits for Women
The President’s intent to privatize Social Security, in the words of Gene Sperling, “simply adds risk to the one risk-free leg of the retirement stool.” This new risk would threaten the certainty that all Americans – especially women – rely upon in planning for their retirement. Social Security is the only source of retirement income for 29 percent of women, and without it more than of all white women and nearly two-thirds of minority women would live in poverty. Social Security provides more than half of total income for female widows and single women. This year, the Congress will consider numerous ideas about how best to shore-up Social Security. This resolution reminds the Congress that the economic protections afforded to women by Social Security must be accounted for during this upcoming debate.
