Summer 1944
Dingell is drafted into the Army and starts service in October. He later says: "I didn't have a very distinguished career in the military. At Christmas time, my outfit was getting ready to go to the Bulge. I got meningitis and was out for about three months, so I didn't get to the European theater. My company of about 210 men went into the Bulge. Only ten came back, so I regard myself as fortunate."(The Washingtonian, January 1986)
Dingell later said: "Army experience and service has done more to shape my life and give me the drive and ambition to continue to serve my country as a public servant than any other single event in my life. During my two years in the service, I gained invaluable experience. It taught me the meaning of discipline and respect – two qualities which I believe are the keys to success in the United States."(Association of the Army)
