Speaker of the House Sam Rayburn announces that Dingell is elected to serve on the Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce. This Committee (which will be renamed the Committee on Energy and Commerce in 1981), was chaired by Rayburn prior to becoming Speaker, and is added to Dingell's other assignment of Merchant Marine and Fisheries Committee and Small Business Committee.  In February 1957, the Committee Chairman appoints Dingell to the Subcommittee on Health and Science.

Following in the footsteps of his father, Dingell introduces a bill to provide National Health Insurance.  Dingell has proposed a national health insurance bill every Congress since.  (Press Release, 1.25.57)
