Dingell's Oversight Subcommittee work on foreign commerce issues contributed to the Omnibus Trade and Competitiveness Act of 1988, which included provisions to strengthen the ability of the US to protect itself from unfair foreign trade practices.  (Activity Report of the Committee on Energy and Commerce, 98th Congress)

President Reagan signs Dingell's Prescription Drug Marketing Act into law.  This law protects American consumers from mislabeled, sub-potent, adulterated, expired, or counterfeit pharmaceuticals, which are being dispensed under existing law and practice, and to restore competitive balance in the marketplace.  The bill was created in response to problems with safety and handling of prescription drugs intended for export or to be dispensed as samples, and also economic issues raised by the sale of pharmaceuticals by health care institutions in competition with pharmacies.  (HR 1207, PL 100-293)

Dingell ban on dangerous lawn darts that were marketed as toys for children is passed into Law.  (PL 100-613)

Dingell is elected to an 18th term with 97% of the vote defeating Independent Russell Leone (3%).  Dingell receives 132,775 votes; there was no Republican candidate.

Bush defeats Dukakis in the Presidential election.
